Finally Sharing!

Hi Friends!I had a couple of gals ask me to share my two term papers. I’ve been nervous to share. Now, please know that I do not claim to be a wonderful writer and I hope to not offend. I really wanted to write two good papers on topics I am passionate about. You may…

Post with the Most….or at least the “most” to you!

I attended a conference today in which a conversation ensured amongst spouses about “their favorite post”. It’s funny to me how different people see different things. We do the “AWTR Post with the Most” segment related to MWR activities and things to do near post each month, but I thought it would be interesting to…

Well, call me blonde! I had to read this twice before I realized you were referring to an Army post, i.e. Fort Benning. Maybe because I’m a National Guard spouse, my first assumption was you were talking about a blog post. ;)

What was my favorite post? Hmmm, that is a really hard one. I have lived at 14 posts throughout my life so far. Some, more than once. Every post was my favorite post while I was there. Each place I lived has very special memories. Whether it was where I first learned to ride a bike, had my first kiss, lived with my parents for the last time, met my husband, had children, or any other experience I have been through. Each place has had great things to do or explore. But, since we are talking about our actual favorite post, I would have to say Grafenwoher. Graf was a very tiny post. The commissary was the smallest I have ever seen. But, I loved that small town feeling. The ladies who worked at the commissary knew the customers by name and were always very friendly. My favorite PWOC group I have been a part of was in Graf. We were a very tight knit group of ladies and it felt like being with sisters. The shopping around Grafenwoher was very good. There is Nuestadt where you can get great buys on crystal and Christmas decorations. There is a pewter factory in Weiden where we lived. Poland is just a few hours away for those who like Polish pottery. The drive from Weiden to Grafenwoher is beautiful. Very peaceful with all the green farmland. Weiden is a small town, but full of great possiblities. If you like Chinese food, there is a great place to go in Weiden. The Farmer’s Market always had great produce and flowers. The Christkingle Markt was a fun thing to take the kids to. The best thing about the town, is that we were able to walk to the city center and enjoy the different activites that the town offered. Well, now I am starting to ramble with all the memories rushing back from our time in Grafenwoher. Our time there was one of our favorites.

My favorite post is Warner Barrack’s (Bamberg, Germany). It’s a small post, with a small town feel really (which is what I grew up in!). The city of Bamberg is absolutely the most beautiful city, lots of great shopping, beautiful scenery, etc. What makes this post so great is the PWOC. I’d never been part of PWOC before, but it’s been my saving grace since moving here. We’re about to go through our 2nd deployment to Iraq with our particular battalion and knowing I have so many friends who will support me in every aspect. I’ve also found the absolute best friends I’ve ever had as far as Army wife to Army wife goes. I love how close we are to all of Europe. 4 Hours to Poland, 2 hours to Czech Rep., 3 hours to Austria, 4 hours to France, Switzerland, 6 hours to The Netherland’s. THE CYS is good. There’s always improvements that could be and should be made, but over all it’s a great program here. My kids have loved being able to play all the sports offered through them, learn basic German. The chapel community over all is amazingly strong and that’s all the various congregations, but especially the Protestant service which offers a wide variety of support and activities: AWANA, VBS, an AWESOME Children’s Church, PWOC, Retreats. I’ve truly never felt so blessed to live anywhere as I do living here in Bamberg! I honestly dread the day we have to leave here. I’ve never felt so “at home” as I do here! Bamberg is a small Army Post, but like anywhere it is what you make of it. If you do nothing, you’ll get nothing…but if you go outside your comfort zone, if you get involved in the community you will get so much out of it!

Tara,I am not a military spouse. I am a single mom with two little girls and we live in Houston, Texas. My fiance is in the National Guards based in South Dakota. For 8 months now (since he left for Iraq), reading posts on your blog has helped me overcome the very painful and conflicting emotions triggered by the separation. I really would like to attend this event and hopefully meet you to thank you in person for making a difference in my life. I think my fiance should be thankful too because without such a tremendous support by reading about so many heartfelt and truly amazing stories shared by very courageous women on this blog, I would not have the strength to support him in his military endeavors. Can I thus attend this event? Whom should I contact, here in HOuston?Thank you or all you do,Sophie

Nothing like it…

Yep, nothing like returning a soldier to his family after 15 months of being apart and then three weeks after he returns smacking down a PCS three months later! Yes, all — we are Fort Sill, OK bound in August. Anyone live around Sill want to tell me more about the area? We’ve been there…

Ahhhhh….sorry guys! I wish I knew what to tell you abot Fort Sill, but I have only been there once. I know the installation is gorgeous and that’s about it. Any thoughts on living on post? You might do well now that you are field grade. Hey, you’ll be closer to your Missouri home! That’s a plus right?

I loved living on post. The elementary school on post is very good. Elgin is a little far, but you guys are used to living away from post. The commisary there was just renovated, it is fantastic. There are now two super walmarts in Lawton!!!

Hi,You don’t know me. I am a native Oklahoman and my husband and I were stationed there for 9 years. We still own a house there. We lived between Lawton/Ft. Sill and Elgin. We received country living, but were 10-15 minutes from anything on post or in town.
