Happy Mother’s Day to all my fellow mommas out there! My hope for you all today is that you’re reading this in your pjs from the comfort of your warm, snuggly beds after sleeping in past 9 am and being treated to breakfast in bed. But, because I’m a mom too (and also an Army…

Lupe’s Fight: One Soldier’s Tale of Unspeakable Tragedy and Unwavering Strength

When a woman falls in love with a soldier, she knows she’s taking a chance.  She knows that she is giving her heart to a man who has given his life to the military.  She knows that she will very likely send him off to war, possibly more than once.  She knows that there will…

Marie Shavers - April 17, 2013 - 7:36 pm

Hope someone way way higher comes across this article! This is so sad and I witness the Army everyday not doing shit for families! Darnell is a shitty hospital who put my son through hell and mis diagnosed him! Patient advocacy Corey Harvey doesn’t assist with much either! I hope someone reads this and makes a change! I can’t believe our men and woman defend our country but some damn insurance that they work for will hassle the hell out of them! Can’t wait till my husband retires! The Army is no longer the way is used to be!

This absolutely makes me sick. I was a military spouse as well. Husband is now retired. I had friends that died from being misdiagnosed while serving as well. One of my dearest friend’s cancer death inspired me to go back to school and become a nurse. I am now a Gastroenterology nurse and as I read the article I knew he had colon cancer just by his signs and symptoms. Unfortunately, these misdiagnosing events happen in civilian hospitals. An ill persons best hope is a nurse who still cares about his or her patient. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to pull a doctor aside and insist on a relook for a patient. The patients second best friend is anyone who will advocate for him/her. Sometimes it takes the insistance by someone else to force the MD to really pay attention. Yes it is harder in the military because you have rank involved. However, a military doctors primary responsibility is the patient and we have to be strong enough to stand for that patient who needs us. Whether you are friend, family or a nurse the patient is counting on us to advocate for him/her. So it is our responsibility to hold the MD’s accountable- military or civilian.

Elizabeth Viescas Lizama - April 17, 2013 - 11:12 pm

BrittneyandBrandin Leblanc - April 18, 2013 - 1:49 am

I remember a couple of years ago a soldier in my husbands unit here in Korea was sent home to die from cancer because they kept misdiagnosing him. He died I believe 2 weeks after getting back to the states. These doctors need to be help accountable for their actions or lack of actions.
My thought and prayers go out to the Maldonado family.. never give up!

Susan Knack - April 18, 2013 - 2:23 am

I am so sorry that you’ve faced so much sadness nnd had to deal witih an uncaring government. I pray that things get better. You and your husband are to be praised for the strength you’ve shown.

David Lopez - April 18, 2013 - 2:37 am

How can you tell a soldier to be brave. Courage has been integrated in his dna. What we can say is…Youre not alone friend. I, along with many, many people who’ve crossed your path in this young life will continue to pray for you to overcome this. Never underestimate the power of prayer, and you’ve got thousands on your side.

Jessica Aguilar Gonzales - April 18, 2013 - 3:30 am

Prayers for Lupe & family YERY May the Lord continue to Bless you with strength in everything you do you’re a great wife keep the FAITH!!!

Lana Turner - April 18, 2013 - 3:33 am

I feel the military doctors and hospitals should be held accountable. That needs to change. I have heard alot about misdiagnose a child died in Jacksonville fl because of that about 4 years ago but I thought they did a lawsuit and won or so I heard.

Eli Fernandez - April 18, 2013 - 4:34 am

If I can’t take a meal, is there somewhere I can send a donation?

Eli Fernandez - April 18, 2013 - 4:35 am

I thought of posting this on Senator Ted Cruz’s facebook page, but I don’t know how the family would take that?

Stacey Corona - April 18, 2013 - 10:07 am

Prayers to your family! God is powerful & can do all things. My husband of 10years is serving his 12th year in the Army & is stationed at Ft Hood. In 2006 he broke his wrist, he was undeployable, but command ordered him to find a way to remove his cast, bc he was deploying. His cast was removed, he deployed, & did his recovery treatment on his own! Couldn’t believe the Army! I’m sending you hugs, love, & much support! Stay strong!

Iris M Marks - April 18, 2013 - 11:09 am

Our prayers are with you and your famliy.

This is a disgrace!!! Unbelievable.

Tricia Sankey - May 3, 2013 - 12:02 am

Prayers for Lupe’s recovery! It is really unbelievable that we can’t sue medical doctors for malpractice, they should be held accountable.

Tricia Sankey - May 3, 2013 - 2:40 pm

Prayers! Well written article that I hope gets national attention, such a disgrace to one who had fought hard for his country.

The Difference The Army Makes

What a difference a few years makes.  Or rather, twelve years.  That’s how long it’s been since our nation was last victimized by terrorism on the scale of yesterday’s attack in Boston.  If you’re anything like me, you’ve been glued to the news:  watching for updates, waiting for new information, wanting answers.  As I flipped…

Army Wives Apocalypse

When it comes to the show Army Wives, actual Army wives have some very strong opinions.  Those opinions seem to be split almost 50/50- either we love, love, love it and see ourselves the real-life versions of Roxy, Pamela and company; or we hate it so much, we’re on the verge of burning our ACU-patterned bras (please…

I love Army Wives…I do not look at it like a documentary…its a soap…a guilty pleasure if you will!

Nikki Norris - April 12, 2013 - 12:37 pm

I love the show as well! Being an army wife myself I see some things that are true about being an army wife and some that are just for drama but I love it all! My husband hates the show but like you said, you either love it or hate it

Elizabeth Glover Doran - April 12, 2013 - 12:53 pm

Real Army wives are different as I know cause I am one for a long time now. You won’t see a generals wife friends with enlisted soldiers wives. Plus you cross a lot of wives for are not friend material. With that said I love this show and even though they get things wrong in it I will continue to be a faithful fan of Army Wives. It has gotten me through deployments and long month of field training.

Jacqueline Christian Thompson - April 12, 2013 - 1:03 pm

I too am an Army wives fan. Yes. I know it isn’t realistic. Too me it is like the “Real Housewives” shows. A fun guilty pleasure!

Sammi Jo Marsh - April 12, 2013 - 1:09 pm

I have about 20 friends, some of the best I have ever had, all from different states, from Long Island to Michigan to North Carolina to California to Mississippi, I could go on but I’ll spare you, lol. And even though we are spread out all over, some divorced and some whose soldiers got out, and some at other duty stations. But once you make that bond, it stays. So I am all for the new girls, because God knows, there ain’t a thing fancy about post housing unless you are above E6, haha. Sad but true. But I love my life as an Army wife and am both dreading and looking forward to the next four years. Because as many tears and fights the last four brought, it was all worth it:)

Julie Carnes-Puckett - April 12, 2013 - 2:52 pm

i love it too :)

Sleep Tight

Confession Time: When my husband was deployed, my kids slept in bed with me every night. Wait, yours did the same thing? See, I knew I wasn’t alone. Okay, okay, okaaaaaay……our co-sleeping arrangement wasn’t exclusive to The Hubs’ deployment. My kids have always slept in bed with me. Judge me all you want, I don’t…
