Thankful for Thanksgiving

december-fat-boy-this-month-is-for-my-holidayWe have finally made it to November, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  I wanted to take a moment today to talk about Thanksgiving because I feel that each year that goes by, Thanksgiving becomes more and more lost to our society.  As I was packing up my Halloween decorations today and getting my Thanksgiving ones out, I realized I needed a few more things to complete my Thanksgiving ambiance:).

I went to Walmart and about five other stores looking for small hay bales and a few other items and was astounded at the fact that Christmas is HERE!  Every store I walked into was nothing but Christmas stuff and the gifts that are probably the must-haves this year – televisions, toys, gift sets, etc… However, if you walk near the food section of the store, there are tons of green beans, stuffing, and all the fixings.

As I made my way home, empty-handed, I was just amazed at how Thanksgiving seems to be just a holiday to eat turkey.  Have we forgotten the true meaning of Thanksgiving?  I was so happy to see the trend that started on Facebook around the 1st of November, where people are writing each day about something they are thankful for.  That is the spirit of Thanksgiving!  Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all that you have been blessed with and a time to remember to count those blessings.  You may not have a lot.  Lord knows I am not the richest person on this Earth, but I have my health.  I have my children and my family.  No matter what problems our country is facing right now, we are still a free country and I am thankful for that.

I don’t believe we will ever be able to change the way businesses view Thanksgiving, but I do hope that everyone will take a moment this Thanksgiving season and remember why we celebrate this important occasion.  Spend time with the ones you love and be sure to reflect on what you are thankful for and how blessed we truly are.  Pass that message onto your children and others and don’t let the Christmas hustle and bustle push Thanksgiving aside.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Veteran’s Day to our veterans, our service members and their families!!:)
